Large File Server

IMPORTANT:
Note that the files on the Large File Server server are NOT backed up.  As such, teachers are strongly encouraged to maintain copies of all artifacts uploaded to the server.

FILE QUOTA:
Each VCOP is limited to 50 GB of storage space.  The user will receive a warning when the quota reaches 45 GB.

Welcome to the JMU Partnership Large File Server.  Access to the server is limited to members of JMU Partnership VCOPs.  The username and password allowing entry to the server is the same as that required for creating a teacher account on the NETS*T Certification system for each respective VCOP.  If you are unsure of this information, please contact the Manager for your VCOP.

Once you have the proper username and password, file uploads to the server are accomplished by using software that supports the File Transfer Protocol or FTP.  This type of software is widely available on the web, much of it without charge.  If you are unsure what FTP client to use, or how to use it, contact your VCOP Manager or other tech-savvy colleague.

The images below show a sample setup for one widely-used FTP client.  The name of the VCOP appears in the User ID field.

Screen 1. Information required by the FTP client in order to access the Large File Server.

Screen 2. The startup tab shows the folder on the Large File Server to which artifacts will be uploaded.

  IMPORTANT:
Make sure that the filename you use for your large file is unique.  If you or someone else uploads a file to the Large File Server that has the same name as another file in that VCOP space, then the original file will be overwirtten and lost.

One suggestion for naming a file is to use your initials along with the date and time the file was uploaded, e.g., file: rei072406-1323 to denote a file with the owner initial 'rei' which was uploaded on July 24 2006 at 1:23 pm.
